Description
Photograph of Ground Zero before Thanksgiving 2001. We had walked to Ground Zero from The Village on a sunny day right before Thanksgiving. As we got closer the temp fell to the point that there was a chill in the air that you could feel. The air had a foreboding odor to it. The best words that I could come up with to describe the smell would be, as ashes. The crowd present moved in slow silence as we were all there for the same reasons. What happened, how could this have happened. I had believed that in going down there I would somehow gain an understanding, new insight that would help me to come to terms. I can remember it like it was yesterday. I had thought that going down to Ground Zero would somehow make it seem more real to me, in some ways it did. In other ways it made it surreal. The massive scale of the destruction was overwhelming. The many persons all around said not a word.
